Senior Backend Engineer (Elixir)

Remote is solving modern organizations' biggest challenge — navigating global employment compliantly with ease, enabling businesses to recruit, pay, and manage international teams worldwide.

The Position:
Join a cross-functional engineering team building tools, APIs, and integrations for Remote's HR and Payroll products. Backend is built with Elixir and Phoenix, Postgres database, React/Next.js frontend, hosted on AWS with GitLab CI/CD. Multiple deployments per day.

Key Responsibilities:
• Lead development of major team-scoped projects and participate in cross-team initiatives.
• Actively contribute to product discussions and provide technical insights.
• Conduct code reviews and contribute to the shared codebase.
• Debug and solve technical and business issues.
• Mentor and guide other engineers.
• Redesign engineering workflows with autonomous agents as the default execution layer.
• Propose and operationalize agentic workflows end-to-end (spec → plan → execute → verify).
• Build reusable agentic primitives across domains.
• Use verification loops (tests, evals, guardrails) to ensure reliability and security.
• Participate in support rotations, hiring processes, and RFC discussions.

Requirements:
• Strong engineering fundamentals and track record shipping secure, scalable production systems.
• Practical experience with agentic/automation workflows.
• Postgres (or similar) and CI/CD experience (GitLab, GitHub, Jenkins).
• Nice to have: Elixir, Erlang, Scala, Clojure, Haskell; Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, React/Vue/Angular.
