Senior Backend Engineer

The Position:
You'll join a cross-functional team of engineers (Frontend, Backend, SRE, QA) working on tools, APIs, and integrations for Remote's HR and Payroll products. Backend is built with Elixir and Phoenix, Postgres database, React/Next.js frontend, hosted on AWS, deployed multiple times per day via GitLab CI/CD.

Key Responsibilities:
• Lead development of major team-scoped projects and cross-team initiatives.
• Actively participate in product work: provide feedback and suggest solutions.
• Provide feedback on code reviews and contribute to the shared codebase.
• Mentor and provide guidance to other engineers.
• Redesign how engineering work ships with autonomous agents as the default execution layer.
• Propose and operationalize agentic workflows end-to-end (spec → plan → execute → verify).
• Build reusable agentic workflows and primitives for use across domains.
• Use verification loops (tests, checks, evals, guardrails) to ensure correctness and reliability.
• Participate in support rotations, hiring, and RFC discussions.

Requirements:
• Strong engineering fundamentals with a track record of shipping production systems.
• Practical experience designing or adopting agentic/automation workflows.
• Postgres (or similar) and CI/CD experience.
• Nice to have: Elixir, Erlang, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, React/Vue/Angular.
